Session 6

8 min read

While walking around on the deck Paeris notices that there are parts of the deck, where the boards have rotted out and are ripe for falling through if someone is not careful.

While the rest of the party is still messing around the captain’s cabin, trying on the pirate clothes they found, everyone suddenly feels a strong undead energy coming from the cargo hold of the ship. Upon stepping closer to investigate a huge undead snake, rises up, breaking through the hatchway with a loud bang. The snake rising up far above the party, its skin clearly rotting away, the flesh sloughing away in many places the bones, a sickly yellow, clearly visible.

The snake scans around the deck with its hazy, lifeless eyes, spotting Rowan standing near where the cargo hatch used to be, the snake lunges forward, making a bite attack and dealing 8 bludgeoning damage. As quick as the head had shot forward, the tail now shoots forward, rapping tightly around Rowan, leaving him grappled and restrained. The snake whips its head around, in the direction of Cassian, and lunges forward once more, doing another bite attack, dealing 11 bludgeoning damage. At the same time the snake pulls Rowan 15ft closer to itself.

Plaman walks out of the cabin, after hearing all the commotion on deck, eye the creature up and down, determining that the creature’s weakness is radiant damage. Felix walks out of the cabin after Plaman, sees the snake and immediately throws his spear at the snake; dealing 8 damage, but the spear gets stuck between two exposed ribs.

Cassian looks the snake up and down as a devious thought forms in his mind, rather than trying to attack the snake right now, he prepares to cast a pillar of force as soon as the snake lunges forward for another bite attack, making sure he can hit it right in the head. While Cassian is doing this, Rowan manages to wrangle free from the snake’s tail, slipping from between the coils and landing on his feet. he then proceeds to use the disengage action and runs away from the snake. Climbing on top of the captain’s hut, it is just a bit too high, or he is still shaken from the snake’s attack, but while he manages to climb on top of the cabin, he stumbles over the railing, falling down and landing prone on the wooden boards.

Paeris uses his newly discovered ability, expels a use of wild shape and transforms into his Leshy shape and casting moonbeam on the snake, dealing 24 damage. The snake recoiling from the sudden intense beam of light.

Insert crit failure of force pillar here

Plaman steps up, cupping his hand and forming a bright ball of light in his hand. Bouncing the ball a few times, before throwing it like a baseball at the snake and while it was definitely an impressive throw, the guiding balt flew straight through one of the coils, missing completely. Using his healing hands to revive Cassian.

Felix moves to the snake, the snakes does a reaction attack, but Felix manages to jump away in time and takes no damage, but the snake still manages to grab him with his tail, leaving him grappled and restrained. Despite this, Felix manages to take out his dagger and stab the snake in the tail, dealing 16 damage.

The snake has not moved and ends its turn still inside the moonbeam, dealing another 10 damage.

Cassian stands up and uses longstrider, walking to the back of the deck. He yells to the rest of the party to run and casts fog-cloud on the snake, covering the entire deck in a thick gray smoke. [His] eyes start to shimmer.

Rowan also stands back up, looking at the snake and attempting to do a medicine check, despite the fog-cloud still around the snake, trying to determine the state of the snake. He is able to determine that the snake is definitely undead… Rowan then proceeds to do a sneak attack on the snake, dealing 12 damage and looking over the edge of the ship, seeing the vines clinging to the side of the ship and the rotting planks on the deck. He yells to the party members that there are vines that can be used to climb down.

Paeris hearing the command to run and that there are vines on the sides of the ship, walks up to the side of the ship and climbs down.

The snake does a coil attack on Felix, who uses deflect attack to reduce the incoming damage. From 16 points of damage to only 11. The snake then proceeds to do a bite attack on Plaman, avoiding the incoming damage with his shield of faith. The snake pukes a green mist (poison cloud), leaving Plaman poisoned, dealing 18 damage. Cassian and Rowan avoid getting poisoned, but each still take 9 damage.

The snake moves forward, crushing the deck under its massive weight, taking 6 points of damage from Paeris’ moonbeam.

Plaman uses a bonus action to remove the poisoned condition, moving over to Felix and helping him up. Plaman then proceeds to stab his sword in the snakes tail, but hitting an already dead part of the body and doing no damage.

Felix breaks free of the grapple, doing an unarmed strike, missing. He uses one of his focus points to use flurry of blows, missing all strikes. Defeated, he does manage to pick up his spear.

Rowan rolls another medicine check; another critical failure… The snake is still undead. He uses heroic inspiration and rolls again; the snake is bloodied. Rowan then uses another sneak attack; missing completely. Finally he prepares to jump overboard into the water below, when the snakes moves to attack him.

Paeris, still standing at the side of the ship, moves his moonbeam, back onto the snake, dealing another 18 damage.

The snake does another bite attack on Felix, doing 19 damage; but he uses another deflect attack reducing this to only 3 damage. The snake then does a coil attack, missing. The snake moves in frustration, shaking the entire ship. Plaman falls prone, Cassian falls down the stairs, as he was trying to make his way on top of the captain’s cabin as well.

The snake ends its turn once again in the moonbeam, dealing another 12 damage; the radiant energy completely vaporizing the snake to dust. Plaman helps and heals Cassian.

Seila climbs on the deck, peaking over the edge, to make sure the snake is actually dead and it is safe. Paeris dismisses his Leshy form and climbs back on the deck. Cassian looks down the hold, seeing a sort of nest, there is a hole in the side of the ship, clearly where the snake entered.

Felix and Plaman goe back inside the captains cabin, looking around once again. Plaman spots a strongbox and noticing that one of the floorboards is loose. Upon lifting the board, he finds another unlocked box. Plaman opens the box and finds:

  • 44 gold pieces
  • 12 silver pieces
  • 2 blue potions with a was stamp
  • a used rope, with knots at different lengths
  • a sealed envelope
  • a telestick (used to count days), with two marks one at 11 days and one at 63 days

Felix spends a minute studying the lockbox and its lock and is able to determine that it has not been tampered with, it is just a simple lock (DC 15); yelling to Rowan if he can use his thieves’ tools. Felix uses the tools to attempt to open the box; after fumbling around for a bit, he manages to open the box finding 120 gold pieces and 2 silver bars, each worth 20 gold pieces.

Seila looks down the hold with a very grave look, not for the death of this creature, but for the deterioration; like a religious shrine being destroyed. She mumbles to herself “this is not natural. mama gretle should know about this”.

Cassian asks Seila who this mama gretle is. Seila reveals nothing, but raises an eyebrow, sighing deeply and grabbing Cassian’s arm, feeling a slight tinge like his blood is itching, saying “looks like you will meet her anyway”.

Finally Seila yells to everyone that everyone should get back on her boat and they should leave this area. After some discussion she tells the party they have 20 minutes to complete the map.

Rowan walks up, Felix checks if the mast is safe. Rowan climbs the mast and makes a near perfect map of the area. He doesn’t see anything unusual while he is up there, except from something shimmering in the distance,a bout 80ft away.

Paeris walks around the deck, stretching his legs. Felix walks to the bow of the ship to check where the footsteps lead. The footsteps go North-East about 150 ft, in the same direction as the shimmer.
